Mesothelioma is one of the more difficult cancers to treat and diagnose simply because it often doesn't display symptoms until it has advanced into later stages. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops in the tissues that surround our organs and the spaces in between them. The symptoms are so basic and general that many doctors will often miss them at first, which is why being vigilant is so important, particularly if you are at high risk.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be aware that many of the early symptoms of mesothelioma are mild, and can often be dismissed as common problems. Many doctors miss the warning signs until mesothelioma has advanced into its later stages.

  2. Step 2

Talk to your doctor if you develop pain in your lower back or sides. This could be one of the first indications of the onset of mesothelioma.

  3. Step 3

Check for fluid or a lump in the abdomen. This could be indicative of a number of minor problems, but is also characteristic of peritoneal mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the abdomen).

  4. Step 4

Pay close attention to your condition during times when you develop flu-like symptoms. Fever, muscle ache, coughing and exhaustion could indicate the beginning stage of mesothelioma.

  5. Step 5

Check your weight at regular intervals. If you're not on a diet or taking part in an exercise regimen, then rapid weight loss can be a sign of mesothelioma.

  6. Step 6

Note that men are twice as likely to develop mesothelioma as women. Being exposed to asbestos also puts a person at risk for the disease.

Tips & Warnings
  • Quit smoking, particularly if you are at risk for developing mesothelioma. The combination of cigarette smoke and asbestos exposure can exponentially increase your risk of developing mesothelioma.
  • Always get a second opinion when testing for the presence of mesothelioma in your body. Even if the first results showed no presence of the disease, it is better to have that opinion confirmed so that you don't miss the opportunity to discover the disease in its early stages.
  • Don't attempt to diagnose yourself for mesothelioma. It is best to note changes in your physical condition and bring them to your doctor's attention.
  • Dealing with a cancer diagnosis can lead to intense feelings of depression and anger. You may wish to join a support group or add a mental health worker to your healthcare team. This is a common practice.
