Opening new browser windows in order to visit a different Web page is a thing of the past with today's modern browsers. Opera enables you to use tabbed browsing for convenient and quick Internet browsing. In addition, you can have links open in a new tab instead of opening a new browser window.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
Step1
Open the Opera browser on your computer. Click on the 'Tools' link at the top of the screen, then 'Preferences.' If you're using a Mac, click on 'Opera' at the top of the screen and then on 'Preferences.'
Step2
Click on the 'Advanced' tab, then the 'Tabs' link on the left-hand side of the box. You can now decide how you want to set up your tabbed browsing.
Step3
Go through the drop-down menu to decide if you want to cycle through the tabs in 'Tab Bar Order' or in 'Recently Used Order.' This feature can be put to use when you press Ctrl + Tab for Windows or Alt + Tab for Macs.
Step4
Hit 'Ok' to accept any changes and to close the Preferences box. You can now open a tab by pressing Ctrl + T on Windows or Command + T on a Mac.
Step5
Reorganize tabs simply by dragging and dropping them into the order you prefer. Those using Windows can middle-click the mouse to close the tab. Mac users can simply click the 'X' symbol on the tab.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are a number of security features included with the Opera software. When filling out a form on a Web site, you can rest assured your personal information will be safe with 256-bit encryption, the highest available.
  • Gather as much information as you need about using Opera by visiting the Opera support section of their Web site (see Resources below).
  • Check your Windows or Linux based computer and Mac to make sure they have the minimum system requirements. Run at least Windows 95 or higher and have 20 MB or free disk space on a Windows system. Mac users should have OS X Jaguar (10.2) or higher. Linux owners need the Standard C++ Library and an X11R6.3+ implementation.
  • Before you put these directions to use, make sure you're running version 9.10 of Opera. All of these steps apply to that version and may not work with previous versions.
