One of the most revolutionary features of the Firefox browser is tabbed browsing. Instead of having to open multiple browser windows to look at different Web pages, you can use tabs to keep as many Web pages open as you want, all contained within one window. Firefox allows for tab options that enable you to use tabs as much or as little as you like.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Change Your Tabs Options in Firefox

Step1
Go to the top menu bar and click on Tools (for Windows) or Preferences (for Mac users).
Step2
Highlight and choose Options for Windows and Preferences for Macs. Watch for a new dialog box to open in your screen.
Step3
Click on the 'Tabs' icon to reveal all of the tab options.
Step4
Choose whether you want new Web pages to be opened in a new window or a new tab by selecting the appropriate radio button.
Step5
Make the appropriate changes to the tabs options by checking some or all of the remaining options. You can choose to be warned when tabs will slow down browser performance, and choose when to be taken to a newly opened tab.
Step6
Close the box in Windows by clicking on the 'OK' button. Mac users can simply close the box.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get the latest version of the powerful Firefox Web browser by visiting the download page on the Mozilla Web site (see Resources below).
  • Inspect your computer before downloading Firefox to ensure it has the minimum system requirements. Windows owners need at least 50 MB of free disk space, 64 MB of RAM, a 233 Mhz processor and Windows 98 or higher. Mac computers should have a 233 Mhz processor, 64 MB of RAM, 50 MB of free disk and Mac OS X 10.2 or higher. Linux systems need the Linux kernel 2.2.14, 64 MB of RAM, a 233 Mhz processor and 50 MB of free disk space.
  • Inspect the extensive listings of articles and tips for Firefox on the Mozilla support page (see Resources below).
  • Remember that Firefox comes equipped with many different security characteristics built right into the software. Warning messages about encrypted sites and pop-up blockers are just a few of the secure offerings.
  • These steps were written for Firefox 2.0.0.2. Some or all of the steps may not work if you're running a different version.
