Browsing through the Internet, you're likely to come across many different file types that pique your interest enough to download them. Luckily, with Firefox you can manage file type associations and configure Firefox to deal with your downloads in a certain way.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Locate File Type Associations in Firefox

Step1
Locate the top menu bar and select Tools (Windows users) or Firefox (Mac users).
Step2
Click on the Content tab once the box opens. Look toward the bottom of the box to find the file type section.

Step1
Hit the 'Manage' button within the file type section to open a smaller box entitled Download Actions.
Step2
Use the Search box to find the file type associations or simply highlight one of the available options.
Step3
Change the action of the file type by pressing the 'Change Action' button. A drop down menu will appear with 4 different options to choose from.
Step4
Decide which option best suits you and click 'OK.' Then close the Download Actions box and exit the Options/Preferences box by clicking 'OK' in Windows, or simply closing the box on a Mac.

Tips & Warnings

  • Go to the download page of the Mozilla Web site to get the most up-to-date version of the popular Firefox Internet browser (see Resources below).
  • Glean information about Firefox from the support section of Mozilla's Web site (see Resources below).
  • Check out your computer to see if it has the minimum system requirements for a Firefox download. Mac users should be running Mac OS X 10.2 or higher, have a 233 Mhz processor, 64 MB of RAM and 50 MB of free disk. Windows owners need 64 MB of RAM, 50 MB of free disk space, a 233 Mhz processor and Windows 98 or higher. Linux users need a 233 Mhz processor, the Linux kernel 2.2.14, 64 MB of RAM and 50 MB of free disk space.
  • A pop-up blocker and encrypted site warning messages are just a few of Firefox's security features.
  • If you're not using Firefox version 2.0.0.2, then the following steps may not apply.
