How to Install Toolbars in Firefox

Firefox comes with Bookmark and Navigation toolbars built into the program. These toolbars provide necessary functions, but you may be wanting more from your browser. To have more, you can download install toolbars, such as the Google toolbar.

Install the Google Toolbar in Firefox

Step 1

Begin by starting up Firefox, then go to the Google toolbars page (see Resources below).
Step 2

Click the 'Download' button in the 'Google Toolbar' section.
Step 3

Read the 'Privacy Notice' and then click the 'Agree and Install' button.
Step 4

Click the 'Install' button in the 'Software Installation' window that will appear on your computer. The 'Add-ons' window will open, which will show the progress of your download.
Step 5

Restart Firefox to complete the installation.
Step 6

Experiment with other toolbars created for Firefox. One popular option is the Groowe toolbar, which allows you to search a multitude of search engines such as Yahoo!, Google, AltaVista and Amazon all at once (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

To install the Google Toolbar directly into Firefox, you must be using Firefox when you perform the install. If you are using a different browser, the toolbar will download to your computer and then you can install it into Firefox at a later time.
These instructions are for the Google Toolbar only. Other toolbars are available that also work with Firefox.
Download Firefox 2 at the Mozilla Web site (see Resources below).
Firefox has minimum hardware requirements. For Windows, these are is a 233 Mhz processor, 64 MB of RAM, 50 MB of free space on your hard drive and Windows 98 or greater. For, Mac, these are a PowerPC G3 processor, 128 MB of RAM, 75 MB of space on your hard drive and Mac OS X 10.2.x. Firefox also works on Linux.
Optimize your Firefox experience on Windows with a 500 Mhz processor, 256 MB of RAM, 100 MB of free hard drive space and Windows XP.
If you are going to make a purchase online or submit personal information, look for the 'lock' icon in the Firefox status bar to make sure the Web site you are using is secure.
These instructions were written with Firefox 2.00.2 in mind. They may not be compatible with other versions of Firefox. Upgrading to Firefox 2 is easy and free.
