How to Use Tabbed Browsing in Firefox

Firefox is well known for its use of tabbed browsing. Before tabbed browsing, if you wanted to have multiple web pages open, each had to be in its own window. This would clutter up your computer and make it hard to switch between pages. By learning how to use tabbed browsing in Firefox, you will be able to quickly jump between neatly-organized pages, all within one Firefox window.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Use Tabbed Browsing In Firefox

Step1
Open a Firefox browser window.
Step2
Click a link that will open a new Web page. Firefox will automatically open the new page in a tab rather than in a separate window.
Step3
Locate a link that will not result in a new tab being opened.
Step4
Use your mouse to right-click the link.
Step5
Click 'Open Link in New Tab' from the menu. This will cause the linked-page to open in its own tab.
Step6
Click the red 'X' on the tab page to close an individual tab without closing Firefox.

  • Download Firefox from the Mozilla Web site (see Resources below).
  • Get help using Firefox from the Mozilla Firefox support page (see Resources below).
  • To use Firefox, your computer needs to meet minimum hardware requirements. For Windows, the minimum requirement is a 233 Mhz processor, 64 MB of RAM, 50 MB of free space on your hard drive and Windows 98. The minimum requirements for a Mac user are a PowerPC G3 processor, 128 MB of RAM, 75 MB of space on your hard drive and Mac OS X 10.2.x. If you are using Linux, the minimum requirements are a 233 Mhz processor, 64MB of RAM, 50 MB of available hard drive space and Linux kernel 2.2.14 (with glibc 2.3.2, XFree86-3.3.6, gtk+2.0, fontconfig/xft and libstdc++5).
  • Firefox 2 notifies you each time a security update is available. Always allow these updates--they usually contain stricter security measures than the prior version. The updates will be shown in the language you've selected to use for Firefox.
  • These directions were written for Firefox 2.0.0.2. If you are running a prior version of Firefox, consider upgrading to the most current version to enjoy full functionality.
