How to Transfer Bookmarks From Netscape to Firefox

If you have a lot of bookmarks on your Netscape Web browser, it is important to be able to transfer them easily to another Web browser. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to make the switch from Netscape to Firefox with your bookmarks intact.

Things You'll Need:

  • PC with Internet access

    Change Your Netscape Appearance

  1. Step 1

    Think about simply changing the appearance of your Netscape Web browser instead of switching browsers. Those who like the layout of Firefox can use a Firefox-style layout to browse Netscape comfortably.

  2. Step 2

    Start at Netscape's Web site (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

    Click on the 'Site Controls' panel.

  4. Step 4

    Choose the layout you want by selecting the radio button that corresponds to Firefox.

  5. Step 5

    Click the 'OK' button to finish altering your Web browser's appearance.

  6. Step 6

    Begin by clicking on 'Tools' and then 'Options.'

  7. Transfer Your Bookmarks and Settings to Firefox

  8. Step 1

    Download Firefox from the Mozilla Web site (see Resources below) if you decide that changing Netscape's appearance isn't enough.

  9. Step 2

    Open a fresh browser window through Firefox.

  10. Step 3

    Click on 'File' and then click on 'Import.'

  11. Step 4

    Click on Netscape in the radio button options.

  12. Step 5

    Click the 'Next' button to continue the process of importing your bookmarks and cookies.

  13. Step 6

    Wait while Firefox loads your bookmarks and cookies from Netscape. Click on the 'Finish' button to complete this task.

  14. Transfer Your Default Browser to Firefox

  15. Step 1

    Click on 'Tools' and then select 'Options.'

  16. Step 2

    Click on the 'Main' button.

  17. Step 3

    Click on the 'Restore to Default' button to set the default page.

  18. Step 4

    Ensure that the box is labeled 'Always Check To See If Firefox Is The Default Browser On Startup.'

  19. Step 5

    Click the 'OK' button.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can get Netscape 8.1.2 on Netscape's Web site (see Resources below).
  • Check if your computer meets minimum requirements for Netscape 8.1.2. You'll need Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 SE or ME, and a 233 MHz processor with 64 MB of RAM and a 35 MB of hard drive space.
  • Find help quickly in Netscape's support pages (see Resources below).
  • You'll get prompts to install all the latest Netscape additions with version 8.1.2. These additions can keep your browsing safe and secure, so be sure to install them quickly.
  • Know that Netscape 8.1.2 is a stand-alone installation. It will not be automatically added to your current Netscape.
  • This guide is for Netscape 8.1.2. If you are using an earlier version of Netscape, the steps could be different.
