How to Set Netscape as Default Browser

When you set Netscape as your default browser, you can take advantage of all the great new features, including security updates, new skins and updated spyware blockers. Setting Netscape as your default browser is simple to do and will benefit the efficiency of your browsing experience. You can change the skin of your Web browser to make it like either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, making it even more versatile.

Things You'll Need:

  • PC with Internet access

    Download and Install Netscape

  1. Step 1

    Head to the Netscape main page to find the latest version of Netscape (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Click on the button marked 'Free Download.'

  3. Step 3

    Click 'Save As' in the prompt window to continue with the download process.

  4. Step 4

    Click on the link of your Netscape 8.1.2 version after it has downloaded. You can locate this link in the Netscape Download Manager.

  5. Step 5

    Click 'Next.'

  6. Step 6

    Read the Terms and Conditions of Netscape.

  7. Step 7

    Select the 'I Agree' radio button after reading the Terms and Conditions in your window.

  8. Step 8

    Enter your zip code into the designated field.

  9. Step 9

    Click 'Install' to begin the installation process.

  10. Set Netscape as Your Default Browser

  11. Step 1

    Click the 'Start' button and select 'Set Program Access and Defaults.'

    Select the Non-Microsoft option in the radio button selection.

    Choose Netscape from the Web Browser drop-down menu.

  15. Update Your Default Browser Automatically

    Click on 'Tools' and then select 'Options.'

    Click on the 'Advanced' panel.

    Click on the 'Browser Update' panel.

  19. Step 4

    Select the radio buttons that correspond to automatic updates and installation.

  20. Step 5

    Click 'OK' to update your default browser.

Tips & Warnings
  • Locate Netscape 8.1.2 at Netscape's Web site (see Resources below).
  • Verify that your computer meets the Netscape 8.1.2 requirements, which include a Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 SE or ME system and 64 MB of RAM, a 233 MHz processor and 35 MB of hard drive space.
  • Get help by browsing Netscape's support page (see Resources below).
  • Rest at ease knowing that Netscape will warn you if any 'phishing,' or stealing of personal data, is detected.
  • Know that Netscape 8.1.2 is a stand-alone installation that won't be included as a part of your regular Netscape updates.
