How to Download and Use Aim With Netscape

AIM, or AOL Instant Messenger, is the online messenger service that lets you chat in real time. You can use AIM with Netscape to combine your favorite Netscape features with the convenience of live chat--any time!

Things You'll Need:

• PC with Internet access

Download and Install Netscape

1. Enter Netscape's home page to download Netscape version 8.1.2 (see Resources below).

2. Click on the 'Free Download' button to begin downloading Netscape.

3. Click on 'Save As,' which will be found in the prompt window on your screen.

4. Wait while Netscape Navigator downloads automatically. After it completes downloading to your computer, click the link that will appear in the Download Manager pop-up. The link will read 'Netscape 8.1.2.'

5. Click on the 'Next' button to begin the installation process.

6. Read the Terms and Conditions in the window, which will appear as a Netscape pop-up.

7. Mark that you agree to the Terms and Conditions by clicking the radio button labeled 'I Agree.'

8. Click 'Next' to continue with the installation process. You will then see a prompt asking you to type in your zip code. Type that in the specified field, which allows Netscape to register your location.

9. Click on 'Install' to begin the automatic installation process of your new Netscape Web browser 8.1.2.

Download and Install AIM to Use

10. Begin learning about AIM by visiting Netscape's AIM guide (see Resources below).

11. Click on 'My Sidebar' on the main Netscape menu.

12. Click the 'My Buddy List' link.

13. Click the 'Setup' button to begin setting up your AIM.

14. Click 'I Don't Have A Screen Name' and click the 'Next' button.

15. Fill in the specified fields in the next window.

16. Click 'Submit.'

17. Click 'Continue' to complete AIM registration.

Use Instant Messaging on Netscape

18. Click 'My Buddy List' to begin using AIM.

19. Type your screen name in the 'Screen Name' field and type your password in the specified field.

20. Click the 'Sign On' button to sign onto AIM and begin instant messaging.

• Download Netscape 8.1.2 on Netscape's Web site to begin downloading and using AIM (see Resources below).
• Make sure that your computer meets minimum requirements for Netscape 8.1.2: 233 MHz processor, 64 MB of RAM, 35 MB of hard drive space, and a Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 SE or ME system.

• Know that Netscape protects against phishing, which means that your personal details will stay secure.
