How to Use Tabbed Browsing With Safari

Save

Tabbed browsing can be an extremely useful feature for a Web browser to have in that it can cut down on the clutter of having multiple windows open at the same time. When tabbed browsing is enabled, new Web pages are displayed as tabs on your toolbar, not as separate windows. Safari makes it easy for people to use tabbed browsing, allowing them to switch back and forth between Web pages with a simple click of the mouse.

Things You'll Need

  • Safari Web browser 2.0
  • Internet access
  • Macintosh computer with OS 10.4 or later

Enable Tabbed Browsing

  • Open up your Safari Web browser.

  • Go to the Safari menu and choose 'Preferences' from the list of options.

  • Click on the 'Tabs' button.

  • Put a checkmark in the box next to 'Enable Tabbed Browsing.'

  • Checkmark the second box down if you want Safari to select new tabs as they are created.

  • Checkmark the third box if you want Safari to always display the tab bar.

  • Close the Preferences window when you are done.

Use Tabbed Browsing

  • Open up Safari and find a link that you want to open in a new tab.

  • Command-click on the link in order to open the page in a new tab. Safari will then add the new tab to your browser window.

  • Go to the File menu and choose 'New Tab' from the pull-down menu in order to create a new tab for browsing.

  • View each of your tabbed pages by simply clicking on the corresponding tab.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't already have the latest version of Safari, use the download page on Apple's Web site and get it for free (see Resources below).
  • The latest version of Safari (2.0) is only compatible with computers that are running OS 10.4 (Tiger).
  • Go to the Apple Support page online for additional help and guidance using the newest version of Safari (see Resources below).
  • Safari also offers advanced Parental Controls so that you can protect the security of your children online.
  • The steps in this guide are only applicable to Safari version 2.0 and may not work with previous editions.
  • Creating a large amount of tabs can decrease the viewable size of each one. This can make it harder to figure out which one corresponds with which page.
  • Closing the browser window will cause Safari to close all of the tabs that you have opened.
