How to Update Safari

Every so often, Apple will provide an update of the Safari Web browser software. These improvements can affect anything from Safari's Web site compatibility, application stability or provide additional features to help users browse the Internet. You may also be able to find add-ons, plug-ins and other security updates by regularly checking for them. In order to keep up with the latest advances in Safari, Macintosh users should check for updates on a regular basis and download them whenever they are available.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Safari Web browser
  • Macintosh computer
  • Internet access

    Update Safari

  1. Step 1

    Open up the Safari Web browser and go to Apple's main Web site (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Click on the heading labeled Support.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the option 'Downloads' from the list of sub-headings.

  4. Step 4

    Type 'Safari' into the search box in the upper-right hand corner of the screen and press the 'Enter' button on your keyboard.

  5. Step 5

    Look through the search results for the latest Safari update and click on the link.

  6. Step 6

    Read through the list of system requirements to make sure you are running a compatible operating system.

  7. Step 7

    Download the latest Safari update by clicking on the blue download icon.

  8. Step 8

    Install the Safari update on your computer.

  9. Check for Safari Updates

  10. Step 1

    Click on the Apple menu and choose 'Software Updates' from the pull down menu.

  11. Step 2

    Look through the list of available updates to see if any of them are for Safari.

  12. Step 3

    Put a check mark next to those that are for Safari and click on the 'Install' button.

Tips & Warnings
  • Download Safari 2.0 free at Apple's online downloads page (see Resources below).
  • The latest version of Safari will only work on computers that are running OS 10.4 (Tiger). In order to allow Safari to achieve optimal performance, Apple also recommends that Safari users have 256Mb of RAM and 3 GB of free space available on their hard drives.
  • The latest update of Safari offers additional security features such as Private Browsing and advanced Parental Controls.
  • If you need any additional help in using the Safari Web browser, log on to the Safari Discussion forum in order to talk to and ask questions of other Safari users (see Resources below).
  • The steps in this guide are only applicable to Safari 2.0 and may not work for earlier versions.
  • Make sure that you know exactly what kind of software you are getting before downloading an update.
