How to Import Bookmarks to Safari From Other Browsers

When upgrading or transitioning to Safari from other Web browsers, you can save yourself the hassle of having to re-bookmark your favorite Web pages and sites by having Safari import the saved bookmarks from your previous Web browsers. While Safari will automatically import bookmarks from Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Mozilla Web browsers, users of other Web browsers will have to import their bookmarks manually. But don't worry. Here's how to do it!

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Macintosh computer running OS X or greater
    • Internet access
    • Safari Web browser
    1. Create a Bookmarks Folder

      • 1

Open up the Web browser that has the bookmarks you wish to import.

      • 2

Create a new folder on your desktop and label it 'Bookmarks.'

      • 3

Drag each of your bookmarked links from the tool bar on your Web browser to the 'Bookmarks' folder. They should appear in the folder as HTTP files.

      • 4

        Close your Web browser.

      Import Bookmarks Into Safari

      • 1

Open up the Safari Web browser.

      • 2

Open up your 'Bookmarks' folder and start by dragging one of the HTTP files onto the Safari toolbar. Safari will then ask you to supply a name for the link.

      • 3

Enter in a name for this bookmark.

      • 4

Repeat the process with all of your saved links until you are done importing you bookmarks.

      • 5

Test out each new bookmark to make sure that it takes you to the correct link.

      Manage Your Bookmarks

      • 1

Click on the 'Bookmarks' heading and choose 'Show All Bookmarks' from the pull down menu.

      • 2

Re-arrange the position of your bookmarks so that they appear in the same order as your previous Web browser.

      • 3

Look through the list of bookmarks that come already installed on Safari to see if there are any that may be of interest to you. Add them to your toolbar as you see fit.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can re-arrange the position of your bookmarks on Safari's toolbar simply by dragging them into the desired position.

    • Keeping the names of your bookmarks short can allow you to fit more bookmarks on your toolbar.

    • Apple's online discussion forum is a great place to get additional help using Safari (see Resources below).

    • Download Safari 2.0 at Apple's Web site (see Resources).

    • For added security, Safari offers users the option of Private Browsing. This tells Safari not to save any of their personal information when online.

    • Since Safari comes already set up with bookmarks for some of the most popular Web sites, make sure that you are not creating any duplicate links.

    • Make sure to close down your previous Web browser before trying to open Safari and import your saved bookmarks.

    • This guide was written for Safari 2.0 and may not be applicable to other versions of the software.

For Internet Explorer to Safari 4.0.5 on Vista 1) open C:\Users\[user name]\Favorites 2) open Safari 3) click show bookmark 4) click bookmark bar 5) drag & drop files from windows explorer to the bookmark bar 6) add bookmark folder(s) Ctrl+Shift+N - rename as you would like - move, rearrange, etc. - have fun.

Yes, this works, but I have about 40 cattegories of Favorites folders and more than 300 favorites (=bookmarks) in my old Windows laptop so dragging them one by one is time consuming. In Windows I just copy Favorites folder from my Documents and Settings and paste the whole folder to the new laptop, drive, etc., not each bookmark. Can something like that be done in Mac Safari?
