How to Automatically Form Fill With Safari

In order to save the time and hassle of manually filling out online forms, Macintosh owners that use the 'Safari' Web browser will often configure their browser to automatically fill out a Web page form using a set of predetermined information. In addition to personal information, Safari can also make it easier to log onto to certain Web sites by saving usernames and passwords and automatically entering them in when logging onto each site. If time is money, than this little trick may end up saving you a few dollars.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Macintosh computer with OS X or later
  • Safari Web Browser

Enter Your Personal Information

Step1
Find the 'Address Book' application on your desktop and open it.
Step2
Click on the 'Edit' button under your own listing. Enter in your name, phone number, email address, home address and any other relevant information.
Step3
Close the 'Address Book' application.

Customize Your Auto Fill Preferences

Step1
Open up the Safari Web browser on your desktop.
Step2
Choose the option 'Preferences' from the Safari pull down menu.
Step3
Click on the heading 'AutoFill' under the preferences window.
Step4
Click on the option that allows you to use the information from your address book to fill out forms. Click 'Edit' if you want to alter any of that information.
Step5
Click on the option 'User names and passwords' if you want Safari to automatically populate your login information when visiting certain sites. Click on 'Edit' if you want to customize the user names and passwords used for different Web sites.

Use the Auto Fill Option to Fill Out a Web Form

Step1
Open a Web page that requires you to fill out your personal information.
Step2
Click on the 'AutoFill' button in the address bar. If you don't see an 'AutoFill' button, go to the 'View' menu and select 'AutoFill' from the pull down menu.
Step3
Check to see if all of the boxes have been populated correctly and make any necessary changes in the 'AutoFill' window by editing your preferences.

  • Download Safari for free at Apple's Web site (see Resources below).
  • Apple's online Support Page is a great resource for getting additional help with Safari (see Resources below).
  • Running the latest version of Safari requires a computer with an OS of 10.4 or later.
  • Turn on Safari's Private Browsing function if you don't want Safari to remember personal information when you are filling out a form.
  • Saving usernames and passwords with Safari's AutoFill function can allow other users of your computer to gain access to Web sites without your knowledge.
  • This guide was written specifically for Safari versions 1.0 through 2.0 and may not work for other versions.
