How to Use SeaMonkey's Security Features

As a Web browser with email capabilities, SeaMonkey's application suite recognizes the importance of security features. It offers many types of security, from encryption options to managing security certificates as well as cookie and password managers.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

    Download the SeaMonkey Application Suite to Take Advantage of Security Features

  1. Step 1

    Begin at the Mozilla SeaMonkey home page (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Click on the 'Download Now' link that applies to the operating system you are using.

  3. Step 3

    Read and agree to the licensing agreement and click on the 'I Accept' button to acknowledge and continue with the installation.

  4. Step 4

    Choose to download and install SeaMonkey's Complete Application Suite to access the most updated security features.

  5. Use Default Settings to Customize Security Features

  6. Step 1

    Choose the Edit menu and the Preferences option to access the security features menu.

  7. Step 2

    Select the Privacy and Security option from the drop-down menu in the Preferences window.

  8. Step 3

    Click on the security feature you would like to customize. Options includes passwords, cookies and SSL, which affects how your browser reacts when going to and from encrypted sites. There's also a certificates option that allows you to control your identity online.

  9. Use Security Features to Check Encryption With SeaMonkey

  10. Step 1

    Choose the View Menu from the navigation toolbar and select the Page Info option.

  11. Step 2

    Click on the Security tab on the Page Info window. The security information will tell you if the Web site is verified and if the information is encrypted.

  12. Step 3

    Check for the 'lock' icon on the status bar of each Web page to identify the relative safety of the page. A closed lock means the page is encrypted, while an open lock means that the page does not feature encryption.

Tips & Warnings
  • SeaMonkey is available for users of the following operating systems: Linux, Windows 95-XP and Mac OS X 10.2 or higher. Additionally, users should have 64 MB RAM and 100 MB free disk space available.
  • There is a comprehensive Help menu available in SeaMonkey's navigation toolbar. Use the search help feature to narrow down your security features.
  • Consider getting a certificate from a certificate authority in order to digitally sign emails and encrypt messages for added security.
  • Security modifications are updated when new versions are introduced. These security features apply to version 1.1.1 of SeaMonkey and may be changed in the future.
