If you've been on the Internet lately, you have no doubt heard about RSS feeds. However, you may not know exactly what they are. RSS feeds are essentially updates on a particular Web site's content. An RSS feed alerts you whenever a certain Web site publishes updates. These feeds are especially popular on news sites, but can be found on Web sites of all kinds. If you subscribe to an RSS feed, you will receive periodic notifications regarding the content of the site with which the feed is associated. If you have favorite sites you want to stay on top of, you should learn how to subscribe to and read RSS feeds with Internet Explorer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Explorer
  • Computer
  • Active access to the Internet

    Subscribe to RSS Feeds

  1. Step 1

Visit your favorite news sites and blogs online. Most of these will have RSS feeds available for subscription. When you find a Web site you love that has an RSS feed, find the RSS subscription link. Normally, this will be an orange button located along the top or side of the page.

  2. Step 2

Click on the link and follow the instructions provided by the site. Different sites may have different rules to subscribe to their feeds.

  3. Read RSS Feeds

  4. Step 1

Look for the star. In the upper left-hand corner of Internet Explorer is a small yellow star tab. This is the RSS feed viewer.

  5. Step 2

Click on the star and select the 'Feeds' tab.

  6. Step 3

View your feeds. When you subscribe to a feed, Internet Explorer will regularly check that Web site for updates. If a Web site where you have a feed subscription has updated since you last viewed it, the Internet Explorer RSS feed view feature will tell you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sometimes you have additional questions of a technical nature regarding Internet Explorer. When these questions come up, go to the Internet Explorer FAQs page to find answers (see Resources below).
  • Memory is king when it comes to operating Internet Explorer on your computer. Your hard drive must have at least 64 MB of RAM or Internet Explorer will not run. Check your computer to see how much memory you have before downloading the program.
  • Pop-up ads are the bane of Web surfers. Fortunately, Internet Explorer comes with a pop-up blocker already installed and turned on.
  • Only Internet Explorer 7.0 is valid for these instructions. Any other versions of the program may not be equipped to subscribe to and read RSS feeds or may have different steps to do so.
