How to Find and Download Internet Explorer Add Ons

Add ons are small programs that you can download into Internet Explorer that make using the Internet more fun. Add ons do not come standard with Internet Explorer, which is why they are called 'add ons.' There are many different types of add ons. They can be used for security, enhanced convenience or for pure fun. You can find and download all kinds of add ons for Internet Explorer if you know where to look.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with active Internet connection
  • Internet Explorer Version 7

    Get Add Ons for Internet Explorer

  1. Step 1

    Enter Internet Explorer on your computer. If it isn't already installed, visit the Microsoft Web site to download the latest version (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Head over to the Internet Explorer home page (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

    Click on 'Get Add-Ons.'

  4. Step 4

    Examine the various categories of add-ons that are available for Internet Explorer. Each category will have several sub-categories. When you find an area that interests you, click on it.

  5. Step 5

    Look at the various add ons available in the sub-category you chose. If something looks good to you and you want it, click on 'Download Now' and follow the download instructions as prompted by your computer. Once your add on is downloaded, you may be able to use it immediately.

  6. Step 6

    Know that some add ons may require you to restart your computer in order to take effect.

  • Internet Explorer 7 will run on computers using Windows XP, Vista or Server 2003 with a 233MHz processor or higher.
  • With an array of firewalls, encryption programs and spyware blockers, it is safe to say Internet Explorer has got your back. Help it do its job by never opening email attachments from unknown senders. This is one of the primary sources of Internet viruses.
  • For maximum safety, delete any attachments you get as soon as you receive them.
  • Downloading add ons, as described by this guide, is done using Internet Explorer version 7. If you are running a prior version, you may need to upgrade your browser.
