Step 1
Locate your local Tibetan Medical Doctor. You can use the provider directory on the Dharma Haven Web site or the Tibet.com Web site (see Resources below).

Call doctors in your area and set up 1 or more consultation appointments. Explain that you are interested in the history of Tibetan medicine and you would like learn more about the subject. Not all doctors will have time for a leisurely chat, but it's worth making the attempt. If you decide to pursue Tibetan medicine as a course of treatment, you'll have already made contact with a possible practitioner, too.

Speak with the doctors who have time to tell you more about Tibetan medicine. Ask these doctors for titles of reference materials you can seek out on your own to learn more.

Visit Amazon.com and purchase a text such as 'Medicine Across Cultures: History and Practice of Medicine in Non-Western Cultures (Science Across Cultures: the History of Non-Western Science).' This is a classroom-worthy text with a large section dedicated to Tibetan medicine.

Use Tibetan medicine Web sites such as Dharma Haven and Tibet.com to learn more about the philosophies behind Tibetan medicine (see Resources below).

Step 3
Gain a balanced perspective. Read either or both of the Dalai Lama's books to see how Tibetan principles and medicine can affect a person's daily life. Choose 'The Path to Tranquility: Daily Wisdom' and/or 'The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living,' available at Amazon.com (see Resources below).
