As Tibetan culture has become popular in America, this has resulted in an influx of Tibetan medical material that makes it easier for people to study Tibetan medicine. Tibetan medicine, believed to boost the immune system, has become popular as a supplemental treatment for people going through chemotherapy. Becoming a master of Tibetan medicine takes a number of years; however, there are basic steps that can be applied to your daily routine that will strengthen your overall health.

    Get to Know Your Constitution

  1. Step 1

Take your self-diagnosis test, using the materials on TibetanMedicine-edu.org (see Resources below). According to Tibetan medical theory, many diseases and disorders are composed and perpetuated by a poor constitution, or humoral disorders.

  2. Step 2

Read through the table and answer the questions as accurately as possible. The first section relates to your personal constitution, which consists of your background and history up to this point in your life.

  3. Step 3

Answer the humoral questions truthfully, as these questions are related to your recent medical history.

  4. Step 4

Grade yourself. If your health is normal, you will score 0-6 points. If your score falls between 7-13 points, you have a possible constitutional disorder, which can be treated through meditation, diet modifications and perhaps herbal medicine. However, if you score between 14-20 points, medical treatment is advised.

  5. Step 5

Use the knowledge you gained through this self-evaluation when speaking with a Tibetan medical doctor.

  6. Consult a Tibetan Medical Doctor

  7. Step 1

Locate a Tibetan medical doctor using the Web site of the Tibetan government in exile (see Resources below).

  8. Step 2

Describe your symptoms to the doctor and discuss a treatment plan. Follow this treatment plan through to completion, even if your symptoms abate or disappear.

Tips & Warnings
  • Start slowly. Tibetan medicine takes into account all aspects of life to determine diagnosis and prescription. Whether you're attempting to treat yourself or are seeing a Tibetan doctor, an overall analysis and treatment of your condition will take time.
  • If you are experiencing severe pain or numbness, visit a medical doctor or emergency room immediately.
  • Tibetan medicine is said to be effective for assisting with the treatment of serious diseases, but it shouldn't be a replacement for modern medicine to treat diseases such as cancer.
  • Basic self-evaluation is perfectly fine, but you'll want to consult a Tibetan medical professional before attempting advanced healing techniques, such as acupuncture.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners are licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider and keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.
