Chiropractic care for neck pain is focused on 'adjusting' your neck based on the location of your pain. The theory behind chiropractic care is that readjustment of the neck and spinal cord will allow the rest of the body to heal itself. Chiropractors treat headaches, neck pain, lower back pain and joint conditions. It's better to exercise due diligence ahead of time than be stuck with a sore neck on the table.

Avoid Bad Neck Manipulation Through Chiropractic Care

  1. Step 1

Investigate the techniques of your chiropractor before visiting. Locate your state's chiropractic association through Chiropractic.org to find out if there have been any complaints, malpractice suits or other reasons to avoid your chiropractic care provider (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Ask your chiropractor for referrals / testimonials from other patients who have had neck manipulations. Only doctors with nothing to hide will feel free to have you speak with other patients. Today's HIPPA rules prohibit giving you access to patient names, but the chiropractor should be able to contact a patient on your behalf and set up a conversation.

  3. Step 3

Observe the waiting room of your provider. If it's continually busy, ask some of the patients waiting what they think of the care they receive. Anyone with a war story will be happy to share it. More than likely, if the storytellers are still seeing that chiropractor, the provider must be doing something right.

  4. Step 4

Know what to expect in terms of cost. Fees for chiropractic visits are usually inexpensive to moderately priced.

  5. Step 5

Learn more about chiropractic manipulation by reading 'Chiropractic First: The Fastest Growing Healthcare Choice...Before Drugs or Surgery,' available at Amazon.com (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Whenever seeking to relieve symptoms through alternative medicine, keep track of pain or other symptoms after you start treatment. If your current problem gets worse or if you develop new symptoms, like vomiting or numbness in your extremities, bring them to the attention of your medical doctor immediately.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners are licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider and keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.

This should read "to the attention of your doctor immediately."
Chiropractic physicians are doctors... and should be the first you notify concerning any changes in symptoms.
