When it comes to your health, don't ignore potential side effects of your treatment. Chiropractors base their treatments on the philosophy that returning your spine to its natural alignment will minimize or cure other health problems, from aches and pains to indigestion. Before you agree to chiropractic care, ask questions. If you don't get answers that satisfy you, get a second opinion or choose a different chiropractor.

Learn About the Side Effects of Chiropractic Care

  1. Step 1

Ask your chiropractor if there are potential side effects from the suggested course of treatment. Chiropractic treatment is considered safe for low back pain and helpful with some types of neck pain and headaches. Recognized side effects range from minor pain at the site of manipulation to short-lived headaches and fatigue.

  2. Step 2

Call your health care provider's hotline. Ask for the resource person who handles subscriber questions regarding conditions and treatment options. Find out if they have any documentation about side effects from your specific treatment.

  3. Step 3

Ask to speak to several of your chiropractor's current or former patients. Talk to them about side effects they experienced, as well as how painful the symptoms were and how long they persisted. If you hear anything that worries you, bring it up with your chiropractor immediately.

  4. Step 4

Visit the Healthwise Web site to learn more about chiropractic treatments and possible side effects (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask your Better Business Bureau if there have been complaints lodged against your chiropractor's office. If so, investigate further to find out whether any of the cases relate to your current problem.
  • The cost of office visits will be moderate and may be covered by your health insurance. Ask your provider before you make an appointment to learn about coverage levels and whether you need to see a plan-approved practitioner to be reimbursed.
  • Make sure you advise your medical doctor when you start receiving chiropractic care. If your chiropractor does not diagnose your health problem correctly, the delay in receiving treatment for the real problem could harm to health.
  • Side effects lasting longer than 24-48 hours should be brought to the attention of your chiropractor and medical doctor immediately.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners are licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider and keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.
