Good chiropractors may help restore your health, while bad ones can ruin it. Most chiropractors rely on spinal manipulation, with the idea that any out-of-line vertebrae can affect other body systems and organs. However, there is a good deal of controversy as to whether or not this comprehensive approach is valid. A chiropractor who insists on using spinal manipulation to cure everything could be one of the bad ones. Ask for a second opinion if you're not comfortable with what you hear.

Spot a Bad Chiropractor Before It's Too Late

Step1
Visit the FCLB Web site (see Resources below). The link provided will take you to the instructions for making a query about your chiropractor. Have your credit card handy, as there is a small charge for each request.
Step2
Click on the 'Query Form' link. Print the form and fill it out (be sure to include the fax number you can be reached at on the form or cover sheet). Fax it back with your payment information included. You will receive a response via fax within 1 business day.
Step3
Check with your insurance company, if you're insured. Major HMOs and insurance carriers screen the practitioners they allow in their plans. Call your carrier and ask whether they've received any complaints against your chiropractor.
Step4
Go to the World Chiropractic Alliance Web site (see Resources below). Find your state on the list and click on the link to your state's Board of Examiners. If you have an incident to report, you can contact them to do so. Ask them your questions about a chiropractor's credentials or find out if there are any complaints on record for your chiropractor.
Step5
Spot the warning signs. Is your chiropractor unprofessional in his conduct or the way he/she addresses you? Does he or she take your pain seriously and work with you to advance toward a solution? If you suspect your chiropractor isn't doing all he or she should be, start making notes after each visit about the conduct you feel is improper. Should you decide to report an incident, your notes will be a valuable reference.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always ask around to see if your friends or neighbors have heard of, or have visited, the chiropractor you plan to see.
  • If you suspect that your chiropractor or potential chiropractor may have been in trouble before, contact the FCLB (Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards). You can ask about any actions taken against the chiropractor, and find out whether his or her malpractice insurance is up to date.
  • If you suffer from excessive pain, spinal or otherwise, while undergoing chiropractic care, stop immediately and consult with your general physician.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners are licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider and keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.
