Before popping aspirin for backaches and knee pain, find a good chiropractor. The chiropractor will examine you to see if muscles, joints or nerves are out of alignment. Chiropractic treatments focus on manipulation of the spine and neck. Chiropractors think that if the spine is restored to proper alignment, the body will heal itself. The costs of your visits will be moderate and most insurance plans cover chiropractic care.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Find a Chiropractor

Step1
Find a chiropractor near you by checking the 'Chiropactor Pages' at the ChiroDirectory Web site (see Resources below). Click on your state and then your city. Enter your zip code if your city isn't listed.
Step2
Evaluate the listing of chiropractors for your city or zip code. Read over the description of that practioner. There may be more than one listing for an office if multiple chiropractors are practicing together. The listing will give you information about the doctor's education and treatment methods.
Step3
Narrow down your list of potential chiropractors. Starting with 5 to 7 names, call or visit each chiropractor's office and ask for references, including current and former patients. Follow up with these references and get a feel for how available the chiropractor is (what about after-hours appointments?), how long most patients stay with him or her and how long he or she has been in business.
Step4
Choose a chiropractor based on the feedback you receive. Make an initial appointment with your chiropractor to see how well you get along. Remember, you can always try another name on the list if you don't enjoy your experience with the first chiropractor.
Step5
Learn more about chiropractic care by visiting the Web site for the International Chiropractors Association (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • When you visit your chiropractor for the first time, wear loose, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes. Take a list of written questions with you and jot down the answers. Also take a written list of current medications, medical history and details about the accident, injury or general pain that you hope to treat.
  • Make sure you check a chiropractor's credentials before agreeing to a treatment plan. Ask for references, including current and former patients.
  • Don't substitute chiropractic care for that of your medical doctor. It's a good idea to inform your primary care physician of your intention to seek chiropractic care. If your pain becomes more severe during or after a treatment session, immediately consult with your medical doctor.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners are licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider and keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.
