Osteopathic treatments can be used on infants and children to treat a myriad of conditions. Practitioners use these methods to treat colic, ear infections, asthma, adenoidal problems and even cerebral palsy. An osteopath feels for areas of subtle, unnatural resistance. If a blockage to natural flexibility is felt, it may signal problems from an unresolved injury from birth or other trauma. Follow these steps to learn more.

Treat Childhood Illness and Injury With Cranial Manipulation

  1. Step 1

Consult a practitioner if your baby has difficulty sleeping. If your child is a light sleeper or awakens in an agitated state, there may be a disruption in the child's nervous system. It's possible that tension on the skull is causing the nervous system to be in a persistently alert state.

  2. Step 2

Consider osteopathic medicine as an alternative to chemical and drug-related treatments in children. The homeopathic approach may have fewer risks associated with treatments.

  3. Step 3

Use a skilled practitioner of osteopathy, who can gently encourage corrections to your child's body, by focusing on natural methods to return balance and function.

  4. Know the Procedure of Cranial Manipulation

  5. Step 1

Expect treatment to consist of gentle movements coupled with slight to moderate pressure of the muscle, fascia or bones.

  6. Step 2

Position the patient on the examination table. If your child is apprehensive, you may want to ask the practitioner if you can hold the child in your arms or on your lap.

  7. Step 3

Plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes during each appointment. Your practitioner will spend much of the session touching your child's skull, trying to realign the malleable bones using gentle rhythmic motions.

  8. Step 4

Tips & Warnings
  • Osteopathic techniques may be a good, safe, natural approach to treat pain in children. Massage therapy and skeletal realignment practices, common in osteopathy, may provide immediate relief in some cases.
  • Treatment is relatively inexpensive. It may be covered by some insurance plans.
  • If your child experiences soreness after treatment, be aware this is normal. Soreness should dissipate after 24 hours.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, consult your doctor. Keep your doctor informed about any treatment you undertake. See him or her if any pain persists or worsens after treatment.
