Chronic fatigue syndrome is not fully understood by the medical community. The causes of the disorder are unknown; but its symptoms include depression, anxiety, muscle stiffness, frequent respiratory infections, irritability and digestive problems. Chronic fatigue syndrome is incurable, although symptoms will come and go. Since there are no widely used "conventional medicine" treatments for chronic fatigue syndrome, you may want to consider turning to herbs like skull cap, goldenseal and gingko biloba to treat your symptoms. Follow these steps to find out how.

Use Herbs to Treat Chronic Fatigue

  1. Step 1

Take a supplement of gingko biloba to increase your body's circulation and improve brain function. Once your brain is receiving more oxygen-rich blood, you may find your energy levels increase dramatically.

  2. Step 2

Improve your nighttime sleep by taking valerian or skullcap, both of which have been shown to help you get to sleep faster and get a better night's sleep.

  3. Step 3

Increase your body's resistance to fatigue-causing illnesses with a daily dose of ginseng. The herb ginseng is believed to be a powerful immune booster. It can also strengthen your adrenal glands and thus give you more energy to stay awake.

  4. Step 4

Use goldenseal the minute you suspect you're getting sick. Goldenseal has been used for centuries to fight off incoming infections. You can take this herb daily in capsule form for as long as a week.

  5. Step 5

Consider taking St. John's wort on a daily basis to prevent viruses from entering your body and causing you more fatigue. St. John's wort is renowned for its strong anti-viral properties.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most herbal supplements are inexpensive or moderately-priced; but you may save more money by growing them on your own and using the fresh herbs. If you want immediate results, it's best to head to your local health food store or favorite online merchant to get the herbs you need.
  • Herbal remedies to treat chronic fatigue are not intended to replace the care of a physician in life-threatening situations. If you experience extreme listlessness, loss of consciousness, confusion or dizziness, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.
  • Ginseng shouldn't be taken by anyone with a history of hypertension, hypoglycemia or any type of heart disorder.
  • Consult MayoClinic.com to learn how educate yourself about alternative medicine claims (see Resources below). Learn how to assess those claims before you make your treatment decision.
