An integrated amplifier, which contains a pre-amplifier and a power amplifier in the same box, provides significantly better sound quality than a receiver but generally not as good quality as a separate pre-amplifier and a power amplifier.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Integrated Amplifiers
  1. Step 1

Decide on a budget. Expect to spend $200 to $500 for a mid-fidelity amplifier or $500 to $2,000 for an entry-level, high-fidelity amplifier.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you need an amplifier with a phono stage (to attach a turntable).

  3. Step 3

Determine how many inputs and outputs you need.

  4. Step 4

Choose between features and sound quality. For example, tone controls, available on some models, degrade sound quality.

  5. Step 5

Read reviews in audio magazines and at the "Audio Review" Web site to help narrow your list.

  6. Step 6

Consider models from both mass market and "high-end" manufacturers.

  7. Step 7

Take some of your favorite LPs and CDs when you audition amplifiers. Choose pieces that will challenge the bass and treble, imaging and soundstaging, and dynamic range capabilities of the equipment.

  8. Step 8

Arrange to listen to an amplifier at home through your own system if it sounds good in the store.

  9. Step 9

Listen to recordings of music you have heard performed live, if possible.

  10. Step 10

Compare at least two or three models in a short period of time before making your buying decision.

  11. Step 11

Base your final choice on sound quality in your current system, price, warranty, features, and dealer service before and after the sale.
