Folk medicine was used to treat conditions like canker sores, infections and digestive problems long before modern medicine came along. Folk medicine, or the use of traditional, regional treatments, relies heavily on botanicals and other all-natural ingredients. Follow these steps to learn more.

Things You'll Need:

Use Folk Medicine to Treat Canker Sores

  1. Step 1

Use apple cider vinegar to rinse the mouth. Treat canker sores this way twice a day to relieve pain until the sore is gone.

  2. Step 2

Use the acidic benefits of apple cider vinegar in a mouthwash. Although it can be painful, reports claim that it's worth the temporary discomfort to experience the relief.

  3. Step 3

Use a tea bag to treat your canker sore. A popular choice is chamomile tea.

  4. Step 4

Clear the pores. Possessing strong astringents, tea leaves have been said to actively pull offending bacteria out of skin, including that which causes a canker sore.

  5. Step 5

Apply the tea bag directly to the canker sore. If this causes you to gag, as it can for some, drink prepared tea instead. Allow it to steep for several minutes before you do.

  6. Step 6

Rinse with a salt water solution for approximately 30 seconds to relieve canker sore pain. This folk medicine remedy is also excellent for freshening your breath.

  7. Step 7

Try an old Southern folk medicine remedy on your canker sore: black strap molasses. It's said to coat the sore and relieve the pain for several hours afterward.

  8. Step 8

Consume a few pieces of citrus fruit, like orange or lemon, to help neutralize the sore. At first, it might sting; but any irritation will dissipate.
