A 24-hour cleanse can remove toxins very effectively in a short period of time if you're otherwise healthy. It works especially well after you've been sick or after you've been eating or drinking too much. Whichever program you choose, a 24-hour cleanse can help you with short-term detoxification needs. There are many different types of cleanses used to treat everything from excess weight to lethargy. A cleanse can involve fasting or a restricted diet. It will likely require that you abstain from tobacco and alcohol while you take herbs and use enemas or laxatives. Follow these steps to learn more.

Choose the Right 24-hour Cleanse for You

  1. Step 1

Determine if you want to do your 24-hour cleanse using only specific foods or juices that may be less expensive than purchasing and using a pre-made program. Many of the most successful programs are based on foods like pomegranates, almonds, grapefruits and cabbages. Pick a food that you enjoy.

  2. Step 2

Use herbs to help detoxify your body. If you purchase a ready-made cleanse product, the herbs will be included in it. If you're creating your own cleanse by following a recipe, you may need to visit an herbalist or health food store to purchase common cleanse ingredients like psyllium husk (a bulking agent). Other natural cleansers, like cayenne pepper (a popular liver cleanser), may already be in your spice rack.

  3. Step 3

Read reviews comparing the different types of cleanses for effectiveness and cost on Web sites like "Natural Healing Today" (see Resources below). Expect the total cost of your cleanse to be inexpensive.

  4. Do Your 24-Hour Cleanse

  5. Step 1

Choose to perform your 24-hour cleanse during a time of relative peace. You will benefit from your cleanse much more if it occurs over a peaceful, quiet Sunday at home rather than during a hectic Monday at the office.

  6. Step 2

Take at least 2 hot showers during the 24 hour cleanse period. Scrub your entire body with a sponge or a loofah. This will enhance blood circulation. It also helps flush the toxins from your body through the pores of your skin.

  7. Step 3

Exercise for at least an hour during the cleanse period. The activity will also help with blood circulation and toxin expulsion. You'll sweat them out. If you're fasting, be sure to exercise gently. A brisk walk would be more appropriate than a grueling run, for instance.

  8. Step 4

Consider visiting a sauna during the cleansing period, which will speed up the purification process.

  9. Step 5

Drink at least 7 to 10 glasses, each 8 oz., of purified or distilled water every day of the cleansing period.

  10. Step 6

Learn more by purchasing a book on fasting like "The 24-Hour Turnaround: The Formula for Permanent Weight Loss, Antiaging, and Optimal Health--Starting Today" (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Check with your doctor before beginning any type of fast or cleanse, especially if you're being treated for any medical conditions.
  • Most 24-hour cleanse programs aren't designed to be used for longer than a day. Stop the program if you begin to notice any serious side effects, such as gastrointestinal pain.
  • Visit a doctor or ER right away if you become intensely dizzy or begin to hallucinate.
