How to Manage Portfolios With Yahoo Finance

Yahoo Finance portfolios are free on Yahoo. You can use them to keep track of all your personal finance information in a secure environment. You can create as many portfolios as you would like, but you will need a Yahoo account to use this service.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Yahoo account

    Create Portfolios With Yahoo Finance

  1. Step 1

    Start by clicking on the 'Finance' link in the list of services on the Yahoo home page (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Select the 'My Portfolios' tab, and then click on 'Add Portfolio.' This will lead you to a page with a variety of portfolio formats from which to choose.

  3. Step 3

    Choose the portfolio style you want. Enter a name for your new portfolio in the field provided.

  4. Step 4

    Select your preferred currency from the menu, and then choose a default view for your portfolio.

  5. Step 5

    Check or clear boxes to further design how you want your portfolio to be displayed. Click 'Continue' when you are finished. You will be led to a page where you can begin entering transaction details to store in your portfolio.

  6. Step 6

    Type in transactions using the form provided to track buys, sells and other financial activity in your portfolio. Click 'Save' when you have finished entering each transaction. Click 'Save And Create Another' to keep entering transactions until you are finished.

    Repeat this entire process to create other types of portfolios with Yahoo Finance.

  8. Manage Your Portfolio With Yahoo Finance

  9. Step 1

    Log in to your Yahoo account and visit the Yahoo Finance home page to manage changes to your Yahoo Finance portfolio (see Resources below). Under the 'My Portfolios' tab, select the portfolio you want to manage.

  10. Step 2

    Click on the 'Edit Portfolio' link on your portfolio's page. Here you can manage all the elements you originally customized for your portfolio.

  11. Step 3

    Adjust the amount of shares you own and other fundamentals by clicking on the 'Enter More Info' button. Make your changes, and then click 'Save.'

  12. Step 4

    Delete an entire portfolio by simply going to the portfolio page, clicking the 'Edit' link, and then selecting the 'Delete This Portfolio' link on the Edit page.

  13. Step 5

    Use Yahoo Finance Help anytime to gain more information on managing your portfolios (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Never reveal information in your portfolio to people you meet online or otherwise make it public. Yahoo offers a secure way to record your financial information with its portfolio service, but cannot guarantee your security when chatting with strangers.
