Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Sign up for a Yahoo Account

  1. Step 1

Go to Yahoo's home page and sign in to your account (see Resources below). If you do not have a Yahoo account you will have to create one. The process is free.

  2. Step 2

Start creating a Yahoo account by clicking on the 'Sign Up' link on Yahoo's home page.

  3. Step 3

Complete the form on the registration page with your name and other required information. Carefully choose a username that will identify you to recipients of emails and instant messages, and type in a password that will be easy for you to remember.

  4. Step 4

Click 'I Agree' after reading the terms of service and answer any further questions to finish the registration process and move on to creating your Yahoo Finance portfolios.

  5. Create Portfolios With Yahoo Finance

  6. Step 1

Visit the Yahoo Finance Web site (see Resources below).

  7. Step 2

Select the "My Portfolios" tab and select "Create Portfolio" or "Add Portfolio," however it appears on your computer. You will be given a variety of portfolio styles from which to choose.

  8. Step 3

Click on each portfolio style to read about its features and help you decide what kind of portfolio you want to create now. When you have decided, enter a name for your Portfolio in the field provided. In this example, we will be creating a 'Track Transaction History' portfolio, but the portfolio-creating process is similar for all styles.

  9. Step 4

Choose your preferred currency from the drop-down menu, then select a default view for your portfolio. You can always change your preferences later on so don't worry about making the wrong decision on topics like this now.

  10. Step 5

Place checks in or uncheck boxes to further indicate how you want your portfolio to be viewed. Like all of Yahoo's services, Yahoo Finance portfolios are built to be flexible, meeting your distinct needs.

  11. Step 6

Click "Continue" when you are finished with this page. On the following page you will be able to start entering transaction details to store in your portfolio.

  12. Step 7

Enter portfolio transactions using the form on this page to track buys, sales and other financial activity in your account. Click "Save" when you finish entering each transaction. You can also click "Save And Create Another" to keep entering transactions.

  13. Step 8

Repeat the entire process to create other types of portfolios with Yahoo Finance, such as one to track current holdings and one to track a symbol watch list.

  14. Step 9

Take advantage of Yahoo's extensive support services by clicking on the 'Help' link on the Yahoo Finance home page anytime you need further support (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to choose a password that is easy to remember but difficult to guess. Preferably it should incorporate both numbers and letters.
