Chat rooms were once very simple places for people to communicate with one another through text and emoticons. Today's chat rooms, however, include a host of additional features that create an impressive multimedia experience. With Yahoo, for example, it's possible to play music in Yahoo chat rooms.

  • Computer
  • Yahoo account

    Play Music in Chat Rooms

  1. Step 1

Log in to Yahoo Messenger by opening it from your Start Menu and entering your account information in the 'Sign In' box. You can also start it by clicking the 'Messenger' link from the Yahoo home page (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Click the 'Join Chat Room' menu option and click on the Yahoo ID you wish to use.

  3. Step 3

Search the list of available chat rooms, which are listed by category, and join the one you'd like.

  4. Step 4

Listen to make sure no one else is playing music or speaking, then run your favorite media player. Yahoo Chat doesn't have an integrated music player, so you'll need something like Windows Media Player to listen to music and play it in chat rooms.

  5. Step 5

Choose the song you'd like to play from your selected media player, and make sure your microphone is near the speakers so the sound gets picked up.

  6. Step 6

Turn your music on and off at will by either selecting or deselecting the 'Voice' icon in the chat window. This will effectively mute your song so others may play a track.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be aware that you can always mute someone else's music in chat rooms. This is a great feature if you're at the office or in a place where playing music would be inappropriate.
  • If Yahoo Messenger is not working properly or you're not hearing music output in a chat window, then consider posting a question at Yahoo Answers (see Resources below).
  • Use common sense when in chat rooms in terms of being polite. Disruptive behavior is frowned upon, including playing your own music while someone else is already playing a track. It is possible to be reported to Yahoo and get banned for this or similar types of infractions.
  • Be sure you don't place your headset or mic too close to your speakers or the sound will be distorted. Keep the sound bars that appear near your nickname in the chat window out of the red zone.
  • Be careful in chat rooms where you know no one else. Some malicious programs exist that can cause your computer to freeze simply by overflowing the chat room with messages.
