The Yahoo Toolbar is a terrific add-on for anyone who relies on Yahoo for news, games, sports or shopping. It provides quick links as well as a search bar to easily find the Web sites you're looking for. Even so, some people can find it clutters the interface or actually ends up taking up screen space they'd rather see used on the Web sites they browse. For whatever reason, it's possible to disable the Yahoo Toolbar in only a few steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • Yahoo Toolbar
  • Yahoo account

    Disable the Yahoo Toolbar

  1. Step 1

Start the Internet browser in which the Yahoo Toolbar has been installed. You can disable the Yahoo Toolbar from any Web page.

  2. Step 2

Click on the 'Tools' or 'Options' menu tab from the menu bar. This will be different for each Internet browser, but will link you to a collection of options related to the customization of your browser.

  3. Step 3

Select and click the 'Add-ons' section. This will display a list of all the current extra features you have running within your Internet browser.

  4. Step 4

Click on the 'Yahoo Toolbar' selection from the list of add-ons. You may need to double-click depending on the way your browser operates.

  5. Step 5

Click the 'Disable' button in the context menu that opens for the Yahoo Toolbar.

  6. Step 6

Press 'Apply' to make your changes active and disable the toolbar. It may also be necessary to click 'OK' once you've clicked 'Apply.' As long as you get redirected to the original 'Options' menu your changes have been made active.

  7. Step 7

Use the 'Uninstall' button as an alternative to disabling the Yahoo Toolbar. Simply click the 'Pencil' icon in the Toolbar, and select the 'Uninstall' icon. This will completely remove the toolbar from your Internet browser as well as your computer. You'll need to reinstall it to re-enable it in the future.

Tips & Warnings
  • The toolbar is useful for managing all aspects of your Yahoo account. You can use it to retrieve email, check your favorite Web sites and even shop without having to re-enter your payment information from one page to the next.
  • Turn off all unnecessary programs when running add-ons or similar programs. Even small programs like the Yahoo Toolbar can demand a lot of resources.
  • If you're having trouble getting the Yahoo Toolbar to work, visit Yahoo Help to find answers (see Resources below).
  • Disabling the Yahoo Toolbar does not necessarily uninstall it. If you wish to uninstall the toolbar, you'll need to select that option from the toolbar's main menu in the 'Y!' icon.
  • If you're using a shared or public computer, make sure you completely log out of your Yahoo account when you're finished--and, better yet, close the Web browser. Otherwise, subsequent users may be able to access your account.

on 1/15/2009 After trying all previous instructions, this is the one that works. The rest don't tell you that in Firefox you must go to Tools, then Add-ons to completely remove the toolbar. Thank you! It was a pesty little devil to find.
