When you want to communicate with several people at once using Yahoo Messenger, one of the best ways to do so is with the conference function. Not only can you talk to all of your friends in a single chat window, but only people you invite to the conference may join, making it the perfect place for friends or family to gather and chat without worrying about strangers hopping in.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Web cam (optional)
  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • Headset (optional)
  • Yahoo Messenger

Use Yahoo Messenger to Conference With Friends

Step1
Log in to Yahoo Messenger by starting the application and entering your account information at the prompt, or clicking the 'Messenger' link on the Yahoo home page (see Resources below). Click 'Sign In' once you're ready. You'll need to create an account with Yahoo Messenger before you can proceed if you haven't done so already.
Step2
Right-click on a contact from your Friends List. This will bring up a context menu including a selection of options available for your contacts.
Step3
Move your mouse over the 'More Actions' menu option, and scroll down and click on 'Invite to Conference.'
Step4
Choose contacts to invite to the conference by selecting their names from the list of potential contacts followed by the 'Add' button. Click the 'Invite Other' button if you'd like to invite someone who's not currently a member of your friends list.
Step5
Change the 'Message' by typing what you want your invite to read in the text field. This can let people know the topic of the conversation, or it can just be a quick hello to let them know it's you.
Step6
Choose to either enable or disable Voice-Chat for the conference by selecting or deselecting the check box. Voice-Chat allows everyone to communicate using a headset or microphone.
Step7
Enable your Web cam at this time if you'd like Web cams to be active in the conference.
Step8
Click the 'Invite' button once you're done setting the parameters and are ready to open the conference with your friends.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to turn off as many programs as possible when using applications like Yahoo Messenger. Sometimes chat windows and chat servers can demand a lot of system resources, particularly if people are using Web cams or broadcasting music.
  • If you need more information about Yahoo services, including advice about Web cams and other multimedia functions, then head to Yahoo Help (see Resources below).
  • It's still possible for malicious programs like booters to work in Yahoo conferences, so be aware of who you are inviting and trust them not to ruin the conference.
