How to Post Job Openings on Craigslist

In many major cities (and even in smaller ones), employees are using Craigslist classifieds to find new jobs. If you have a job opening in your company or can offer a unique business opportunity to new employees, you might consider posting on Craigslist in order to reach this pool of applicants.

    1. Post Job Openings on Craigslist

        Start your search for a new employee on the Craigslist homepage (see Resources below.)

        Note that the homepage for Craigslist is for the San Francisco Bay Area. On the homepage you'll find a list of cities which also have Craigslist pages. Select the city in which you want to post your job openings by clicking on the name of the city; this will link you to the Craigslist page for that city.

        Notice a 'Post to Classifieds' button. Click this button to begin the process of posting your job opening.

        Click on 'Jobs' under the available choices for where to post on Craigslist. Select the categories that apply to your job. This includes such diverse options as 'Customer Service Jobs,' Government Jobs' and 'Security Jobs.'

        Note that if you are going to be posting your job openings on Craigslist in certain large cities, you are going to be required to pay a fee. This means that you must either have a credit card available or you must open an account with Craigslist. Decide which of these is appropriate for you. Skip this step if you are posting in one of the cities which allows free job opening posts.

        Follow the instructions on the screen for posting your job opening. You will be asked to fill in a title, specific location, compensation and posting description. Your post may be simple or you may choose to include more detailed information such as job requirements, salary expectations and appropriate contact persons within your company.

        Click on 'Post' when you are satisfied with your ad. You will receive a confirmation screen informing you that you need to now check your email to complete your job posting.

        Go to the email account which you used to post your job opening on Craigslist. The email from Craigslist will include a link to your post.

        Review the post in its entirety. Be sure to check for typos and make sure you have included all of the information that you want in the ad. If you are happy with your post, click 'Publish'. If you are not happy, click 'Edit' and revise until you are ready to publish.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Craigslist is a classified ad system that is narrowed down by city. If you live in a suburb or rural outlying area, you might consider posting your job advertisement on the Craigslist page of the largest city near you in order to increase the number of interested applicants.

    • Craigslist has two similar sections: gigs and job openings.

    • Job openings in certain cities will require you to pay a fee before posting. If your job is for a one-time event or contracted position, you may consider avoiding the fees by posting appropriately in the gigs section.

    • You may receive a lot of responses to your Craigslist job post. Many of these people will be unqualified for the position, so review resumes and references carefully before trusting your applicants with personal company information.
