Shockingly, this product-lover doesn't recommend using a ton of products when cleansing. If you have somewhat "normal" skin--a dubious term, I know--but if you're not particularly parched or a huge oil slick, let's put you in this dull category. Dull, but lucky! In the shower, just a swirl of a warm washcloth--concentrating on blackhead-prone spots: nostrils, chin and forehead.
Step2
Unlucky and oily? Never fear! You have a few options: 1. Use a glycolic wash two or three times a week. 2. Use a finely-milled scrub EVERY evening. 3. Use the amazing Neutrogena Acne Wash twice a week in the evening--this one leaves your skin feeling a touch tight, but after an hour or so, tightness is gone, and tight, taught pores are all that remain!
Step3
Still talking to my oily compatriots: on the days you're not exercising any of the options in Step 2, use something innocuous and non-stripping. I suggest anything by Dove--or even just a warm washcloth. I know it's shocking to imagine not scrubbing the hell out of your face at every opportunity, but in fact, over-washing can create ever more oil.
Step4
And finally for you dry-skinned BETCHES. I hate you. You don't have to mop, press, blot and wring your face every day. Thrice a day. But you'll have wrinkles and I won't. So I hate you a little bit less. Your cleansing routine is terribly simple: ALWAYS cleanse with an oily balm or creamy cream, every day, every night. I like Ponds. I do. But anything super-creamy will do. Also check out Bobbi Brown's extra cleansing balm.
Tips & Warnings
Obviously, just like your mom told you, remove your makeup every night. Leaving your skin foundation-laden at night invites a world of ugliness the next morning.

This is for Ally with combo skin! If you're combination, try using a very mild cleanser at night. Then try an oil-free cream to boost moisture at night. If you find that you're oily during the day but still somehow dry and flaky, make sure to use a scrub at least three times a week. Be sure not to treat your skin like it's ALWAYS oily, because your skin will become really parched. Good lucky, my combo comrade!

on 1/3/2008 Funny, but nobody is supposed to use a scrub every night.
