How to Wake Up Without an Alarm Clock

Waking up to a buzzing alarm clock can be unpleasant, especially if you’re in a deep REM sleep. Waking to music is a little better but it can still jar you out of a deep sleep. Learning how to wake up without an alarm clock allows for a more peaceful way to wake up, which put you in a better mood to start your day.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Decide what time you want to get up in the morning.
Step2
Determine how much sleep you need. Most people need around 8 hours of sleep but you may be different.
Step3
Wake up around the same time each day. Make a point to get up at the same time, even if it’s the weekend. This will help your body regulate its internal clock.
Step4
Go to bed around the same time each night. This, too, will help set your body’s internal clock.
Step5
Before you go to sleep, tell yourself several times what time you need to wake up. By repeating the time you want to wake up over and over, you are putting it into your subconscious.
Step6
After a few mornings of waking without an alarm clock, your body’s internal clock should be reset and you should be able to turn off the alarm on your clock.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don’t drink a lot of caffeine or soda during the day. You want to be able to fall asleep when you go to bed.
  • Hormones may affect your sleep/wake cycle. If you are menopausal, your sleep pattern may be disrupted. It could take more time to regulate your sleep/wake pattern.
  • If you work nights, learning to wake without an alarm clock may not work. Your internal clock is already reset so you may need to set an alarm clock to help you wake up in time for your next shift.
  • Regulating your sleep/wake cycle so you don’t need an alarm clock may take some time. Don’t get discouraged.
