Looking for an innovative and different present to take to a baby shower? How about a diaper cake? Not only can this clever creation be the centerpiece of the shower, everything in the cake is something the new mom can actually use.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Disposable diapers
  • Elastic
  • Ribbons for decorating
  • Decorating accessories, such as flowers or stuffed animals

Step1
Decide how big you want the diaper cake to be. For a large cake, you will need 96 disposable diapers. For a medium-size cake, you will need about 52 diapers. For a small cake, you will need 40 diapers.
large = 50 bottom tier, 36 middle tier, 10 top tier
medium = 30 bottom tier, 15-16 middle tier, 6-7 top tier
small = 20 bottom tier, 10-15 middle tier, 5-10 top tier
Step2
Begin by making the bottom layer of the cake. Place the diapers on their sides in a circle. There will be an empty space in the center of the circle of diapers.
Step3
Tie a piece of elastic around the diapers to hold them securely in place.
Step4
Create the middle tier of diapers, just as you did with the bottom tier. Secure with elastic.
Step5
Create the top tier of diapers and secure with elastic.
Step6
Tie ribbon around each tier to cover the elastic.
Step7
Place the tiers on top of each other to create the cake.
Step8
Put a small stuffed animal or toy on the top of the cake as decoration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wrap the entire cake with cellophane for easy transport. Tie ribbon around the top of the cellophane as decoration.
  • To give the cake stability, place each layer on a round base, such as a cardboard cake plate.
