How to Buy CD’s Online

Record stores are closing down left and right—like the famed Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. in L.A. It’s sad but there’s a reason for it: people are buying their CD’s online.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • A credit card
  • Headphones or decent speakers
  1. Step 1

Buy used. Go to Half.com, Ebay, Amazon, or Overstock to find cheap versions of the CD. Check seller ratings, but usually CDs are in good condition.

  2. Step 2

Check the shipping price. Sometimes it can be more than buying the CD in-store—especially for a bargain CD that could have $3.00 shipping cost.

  3. Step 3

Read the reviews. Just because someone doesn’t love something doesn’t mean you won’t. A consensus is more persuasive. Reviews that say, “If you love (blank) than you’ll love this” are good, as are reviews that say, “Poorly mastered, a bad greatest hits comp., better versions of this CD are available” and the like.

  4. Step 4

Listen to snippets of songs. Better yet, surf off of a site like Amazon, which only offers short snippets, and see if you can find whole versions of songs on mp3 blogs or elsewhere online—possibly on the artist’s website.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a credit card, not a debit card online. If someone steals your credit card info, it’s much easier to dispute the charges on credit, rather than money that’s come directly out of your account. Use the links: Customers who bought this, also bought…Very helpful for finding new music.
  • Beware of pirated CDs. If a CD is dirt-cheap, there may be a reason for it: it’s not legit. Some foreign CD manufactures, such as Argentina, produce poor-quality pirated CDs.
