Freeware like AbiWord lets you get the performance of a commercial word processor without the hefty price tag. When it comes to operation, AbiWord has many similarities to Microsoft Word, so if you are familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite, you should find the steps to create and save a document in AbiWord very familiar.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • AbiWord
  • Computer

Step1
Open AbiWord on your computer. Let the program fully load, then begin creating your new document.
Step2
Pull down the "File" menu. You can find "File" at the top left-hand corner of the AbiWord window.
Step3
Scroll down to "Save As." This lets you choose how your document will be saved by AbiWord. You can also name the file for easy reference and choose where you want the saved file to be located.
Step4
Create your document. In addition to straight text, AbiWord lets you add tables, create lists and apply templates to a document. You can also add pictures and choose formats appropriate for hard-copy printing or Web site publishing.
Step5
Click on the "Save" icon when finished. This saves the created document after you are finished making changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can save a document created in AbiWord in a wide variety of formats. Go to the "Save As" option on the "File" menu and choose the format that you need to preserve your document.
  • You can also open other documents once you have opened AbiWord. Go to the Document menu found on the top center of the AbiWord window. Pull down the Document window and select the name of the document file that you would like to open.
  • Save your work frequently to prevent data loss due to a system lock-up or crash.
