Like the original Mozilla and Netscape code that SeaMonkey is derived from, there is no built-in spellchecker for the first release of this all-in-one Internet suite. You can add spellcheck to SeaMonkey by visiting an extension site.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Find out what version of SeaMonkey you are running on your computer. Open the SeaMonkey program and click on the "Help" tab. Click on "About SeaMonkey." Read the version number of the Internet suite software. If you are running 1.1+, you don’t need to add a spellchecker, because it is built in.

  2. Step 2

Check the "Install Spellbound For The Mozilla Suite" box. This tells the SpellBound site which version of its spellchecker software that you need.

  3. Step 3

Click on the "SpellBound Extension" link. This downloads a copy of the software to your computer and readies it for installation.

  4. Step 4

Click on the "Install Now" button. This adds spellcheck to SeaMonkey. You will need to restart the browser for the changes to take effect.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may need to install a dictionary for the spellchecker. The dictionary is usually included in the download, but if not, you can download a dictionary at the Mozilla site. See the Resources section for a link.
  • If you are running SeaMonkey 1.1+, you can spellcheck a text field by placing the mouse cursor in the field and right-clicking. Scroll down the list and select "Spell Check This Field." Misspelled words will be underscored with a line of tiny red dots.
  • Although the 1.1+ version of SeaMonkey has a built-in spellchecker, users have reported several deficiencies in its performance. Keep a dictionary handy and pray for an update.
