create blurred photos with a slow shutter speed

With a slow shutter speed and a steady hand or tripod you can create a multitude of intentionally blurred pictures. When properly used this effect will lend a creative dream-like approach to your photos.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camera with adjustable shutter and aperture
  1. Step 1

Start by finding a moving subject that is in a meduim to low light setting.

  2. Step 2

Then adjust your shutter speed to a slow setting. Something in the range of 1/15 to 1/4 would be best. This will force your shutter to stay open longer and let in more light. Any movement within the camera's view while the shutter is still open will appear blurred in the photo.

  3. Step 3

Now set your aperture to f/8

  4. Step 4

Attach your camera to a tripod if you are going to take a picture of an object that is in motion and only want that object blurred.

  5. Step 5

Take the camera off of the tripod and use your hands to slightly move the actual camera while the shutter is open if you want the entire overall image to be blurred.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with these settings liberally. The direction and pattern you physically move the camera while the shutter is open will change the effect.
