How to Set Up Fax Service for Your Laptop PC

Setting up a fax service for your laptop PC means you can send and receive faxes directly on your computer. Not only do you save paper, you can also send faxes from anywhere that you can plug in a telephone line. All you need is an internal modem, a phone line and Windows XP.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Telephone cable with RJ45 connectors
  • Laptop computer
  • Windows XP or other Windows OS
  1. Step 1

    Plug your phone line into the "Line In" connector on your laptop's internal modem.

  2. Step 2

    Go to your computer's Start menu and select "Printer" then "Faxes."

  3. Step 3

    Click on "Install a Fax Printer." The computer will install the fax software needed and then open a wizard to install the Windows XP fax software.

  4. Step 4

    Follow the screens and fill out the requested information.

  5. Step 5

    Enter the phone number of the telephone line connected to your modem when a phone number is requested.

  6. Step 6

    Click "Next," then choose the printer where you want your incoming faxes to print, if desired.

  7. Step 7

    Choose the folder where you want incoming faxes saved.

  8. Step 8

    Type the telephone number and your business name in the TSID box.

  9. Step 9

    Type your telephone number and your business name in the CSID box.

  10. Step 10

    Click "Finish" to exit the wizard.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also connect a fax machine to your laptop and use it as a printer.
  • The TSID is mandatory in some areas. This identification information typically appears in the header area of a fax that you receive. This information helps you identify the fax machine where the fax originates from. This information typically includes the sender's fax number and business name.
