The appeal of an purposely grainy photo is in its classic look and feel. By adjusting the shutter speed to limit the amount of light coming into your camera, you can achieve this effect.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Manual camera with adjustable shutter and aperture

Step1
Have your subject placed in a setting with medium to large amounts of light.
Step2
Then, set your shutter speed to a faster setting; Somewhere in the range of 1/250 to 1/1000. This will shorten the amount of time the shutter stays open, thus letting in less light than is needed which will cause the picture to be slightly underexposed and grainy.
Step3
Next set your aperture to f/5.
Step4
Now take your pictures.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with the faster shutter speeds by taking a few pictures on each setting, this will allow you to see the difference between each speed for future photographs.
  • Because you are going to shorten the exposure time, it will be best to choose a well lit area to shoot in. The quicker the exposure, the more light the camera needs in order to make a picture.
