How to Install a New Video Card in Your Dell Laptop PC

Installing a new video card in a Dell laptop PC can be tricky. In fact, in some cases, there is no way to change the video card that your Dell laptop came with. These instructions work for just a few models of Dell laptops, including the Dell Inspiron 8500 and similar laptops. Check the list of laptops (see Resources below) to find out if the video card in your laptop can be upgraded. If it’s not there, chances are good that your video card cannot be upgraded.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dell Laptop with replaceable video card
  • Compatible video card for your laptop
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  1. Step 1

    Remove the battery from the laptop.

  2. Step 2

    Unplug the AC adapter.

  3. Step 3

    Lay the LCD screen flat down.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the front bezel on your laptop using a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry it loose.

  5. Step 5

    Unscrew the three keyboard screws that are revealed now that the bezel is out of the way, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  6. Step 6

    Carefully push the keyboard forward, then lift it off the laptop. It is not necessary to remove the keyboard completely.

  7. Step 7

    Remove the LCD ribbon connector by gently pulling on the tag.

  8. Step 8

    Remove the four screws that hold the video card in place.

  9. Step 9

    Lift the video card out of the laptop.

  10. Step 10

    Place the new video card in place.

  11. Step 11

    Replace the four screws.

  12. Step 12

    Re-attach the ribbon connector for the LCD.

  13. Step 13

    Replace the keyboard and screw back into place.

  14. Step 14

    Replace the front bezel on the laptop.

  15. Step 15

    Replace the battery and power up the computer.

  16. Step 16

    Follow the instructions on screen to install the correct video drivers for your laptop.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not attempt to replace video cards that are soldered onto the system board.
  • This upgrade requires opening your laptop case and removing the keyboard. If you’re not comfortable doing this, consult a professional.
