Adding a new sound card to your Acer laptop PC can greatly enhance your enjoyment of music and games played on it. Since the sound card in your Acer laptop is integrated with the system board, you’ll need to install either a PCMCIA sound card or a USB sound system.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Software and driver CD
  • Acer laptop
  • Sound Card or USB sound device

Installing a PCMCIA Sound Card in Your Acer Laptop

  1. Step 1

Locate the PCMCIA card slot on your computer. On an Acer laptop, the slot may be either on the left or the right side of the laptop.

  2. Step 2

Remove the PCMCIA card cover by pressing the "Eject" button and pulling the cover out.

  3. Step 3

Insert your PCMCIA sound card with the connectors facing in and the upper label facing up. Some PCMCIA cards will have an arrow to make it easier to orient the card correctly.

  4. Step 4

Press the PCMCIA card gently into place.

  5. Step 5

Windows will recognize the PCMCIA card and search for the needed software.

  6. Step 6

If your sound card came with an installation CD, insert it in the CD slot and follow the instructions to install applications and utilities for use with your new sound card.

  7. Installing a USB Sound Card in Your Acer Laptop

  8. Step 1

    Turn the computer on.

  9. Step 2

Plug the USB sound card into the appropriate USB plug on your laptop.

  10. Step 3

Wait for the computer to recognize the new USB device.

  11. Step 4

Insert the sound card manufacturer’s CD if prompted to do so.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some newer laptops ship with an ExpressCard slot only. If your Acer laptop has no PCMCIA card slot, you may still be able to use a PCMCIA sound card with a PCMCIA Card to ExpressCard adapter (see Resources below).
  • Some sound-card manufacturers include an express install CD with their hardware. If a CD is included with your sound card, follow the instructions on the CD, but only install the drivers and software needed for your computer model and operating system.
