The Apple iMac with the PowerPC processor is easily one of the most popular Macs made, but it shipped with barely enough memory to support most popular applications. Luckily, adding more memory is not difficult.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Apple iMac G5
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Compatible RAM modules
  • ESD wrist strap for electro static discharge protection

Adding RAM to Your Apple iMac

Step1
Power down your iMac and unplug all cables connected to the case, including the power cable. Wait 10 minutes to allow the iMac to cool down.
Step2
Lay a towel on your work surface to prevent scratching the screen of your iMac.
Step3
Lay the iMac face down on the towel.
Step4
Unscrew the three screws on the bottom of the iMac. They will not come all the way out of the case so they can’t get lost.
Step5
Lift up on the stand to remove the back cover.
Step6
Locate the RAM modules on the right hand side of the case.
Step7
Remove the RAM modules you are replacing by gently pressing apart the retaining clips on either side of the module. The module will pop up slightly. Slide the module out of the slot.
Step8
Line up the new RAM with the slot, matching the notched edge with the tab in the bottom of the slot.
Step9
Slide the module into the slot, pressing it gently into the slot until the retainer tabs click into place.
Step10
Replace the back plate and tighten the three screws.
Step11
Replace the power cords, and power up the computer to check that the memory is installed correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don’t have an ESD wrist strap, you can ground yourself by touching a metal part of the computer to discharge any static before touching anything inside the computer. Leave the power cord plugged in, but the power turned off and keep one hand on a metal part of the computer at all times while you’re working.
  • Install memory in paired DIMMs for best performance.
  • Always take measures to ground yourself when working inside your computer to avoid damaging the chips and electronics.
