How to Install RAM in Your Macbook

Your Macbook probably came with at least 512mb RAM— but is it ever enough? Not if you’re running high end graphics and gaming applications. Fortunately, installing additional RAM in your Macbook isn’t difficult.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

• One or two sticks of compatible RAM
• Macbook
• #00 Phillips Head Screwdriver
• ESD wrist strap for electro static discharge protection

Install Memory in Your Macbook

1. Unplug the AC adapter from your Macbook and let it cool down if it's been running.
2. Use an ESD wrist strap or some other method to ground yourself before opening the back of your laptop.
3. Turn your Macbook over and locate the battery compartment.
4. Open the battery compartment by sliding both latches up to release the door, then lifting it off.
5. Remove the battery from the compartment.
6. Using a small Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew the memory door inside the battery bay.
7. Remove the RAM module(s) you are replacing by gently pressing apart the securing clips on either side of the memory module and lifting it to about a 25-degree angle. Slide it out of its slot.
8. Line up the notch in the bottom of the new memory module with the tab in the bottom of the memory slot. Slide the module into place at about a 25-degree angle. Push firmly until the gold metal pins are hidden from sight.
9. Gently spread the securing clips and press down on the module until it lies flat and the securing clips click into place.
10. Repeat to install additional memory in the second slot.
11. Replace the memory access door.
12. Replace the battery and the battery bay door.

Tips & Warnings

• If you don’t have an ESD wrist strap, you can ground yourself by touching a metal part of the computer to discharge any static before touching anything inside the computer.
• Always take measures to ground yourself when working inside your computer to avoid damaging the chips and electronics.
