Just a few years ago, a computer with 64K RAM was considered a pretty fast computer. Today’s CPU intensive applications need a lot more RAM than that just to function. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 1G of RAM to run the new Windows Vista operating system. Fortunately, it’s not difficult to upgrade desktop memory in your Sony desktop PC.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sony Desktop
  • Phillips Head Screwdriver
  • Desktop product manual
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Compatible RAM modules
  • ESD wrist strap for electro static discharge protection

Install Memory in Your Sony Desktop

  1. Step 1

Power down the PC and all attached peripherals. Unplug the power cord.

  2. Step 2

Open the PC case to access the system board. The method varies depending on computer model. Consult manufacturer instructions if it's not clear from the case labeling or construction.

  3. Step 3

Locate the RAM banks on the system board. Sony computers are generally pretty straightforward in placing their RAM.

  4. Step 4

Remove RAM modules that you are replacing if necessary. Gently release the securing clips on either side of the RAM module by pressing outward against them. The memory module will pop up slightly.

  5. Step 5

Lift the RAM module straight up and out of the slot.

  6. Step 6

Position new RAM module directly above the open slot, lining up the notches in the bottom of the module with the tabs in the bottom of the slot.

  7. Step 7

Push RAM module downward into the RAM slot using firm, even pressure on both ends of the module until the plastic securing clips click into place, locking the module into the slot.

  8. Step 8

Reassemble the case and reattach power cords and peripherals to test that the memory is recognized.

Tips & Warnings
  • The instructions above are generic instructions that will work with most Sony desktop systems, however system architecture varies widely. See your product manual for specific instructions on upgrading memory for your model.
  • If you don’t have an ESD wrist strap, you can ground yourself by touching a metal part of the computer to discharge any static before touching anything inside the computer. Leave the power cord plugged in but the power turned off and keep one hand on a metal part of the computer at all times while working.
  • Find your current RAM configuration with a third party utility like Everest Home Edition.
  • Always take measures to ground yourself when working inside your computer to avoid damaging the chips and electronics.
  • Use only the memory types supported by your computer. For a list of memory supported by your computer, see the manufacturer specifications in your computer manual.
