Things You'll Need:
- Sony laptop
- Small Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Manufacturer’s Spec sheet and User Manual
- RAM for your Sony laptop (check online to find the right RAM for each model)
- ESD wrist strap for electro static discharge protection

Step 1
Determine the maximum RAM capacity and current RAM configuration for your laptop.

Buy the same type of RAM that is already installed in your Sony laptop for best results.

Unplug the power cord from your laptop and remove the battery.

Ground yourself to prevent damage to your computer from static electricity.

Check the location of the memory access door for your computer model. You can find the information in the manufacturer’s specifications. In most cases, it will be on the bottom of your laptop.

Open the memory access door by unscrewing the retaining screws. Check your computer manual for particulars on which screws should be removed.

Remove the installed memory you are replacing. Gently press outward on the latches located at either end of the RAM module. If the module doesn’t pop up on its own, gently lift the top edge upward to a 45 degree angle. Slide the module the remainder of the way out of the slot. Set it aside.

Locate the bottom edge of the new RAM module by finding the notched edge. Line this up with the notch in the empty RAM slot and gently slide the module into the slot.

Gently rotate the new RAM downward until it clicks into place.

Replace the memory access door and screws.

Replace the battery and power up the computer to be sure the RAM is recognized.

Locate the screws that hold the keyboard in place. Your computer specs or manual will have this information.

Unscrew the keyboard screws and put them safely aside.

Turn the computer over. Pull the keyboard forward to unlock it from the machine, then lift straight up gently.

Move the keyboard aside. You should now be able to access the memory modules.
