How to Install PC Speakers

A great set of speakers can improve the multimedia experience your PC provides. Gaming, listening to music or watching DVDs take on greater intensity and immediacy with better speakers. Installing speakers is usually quick and self-explannatory, but if you're stuck, it helps to have a few general steps to fall back on.

Instructions

    • 1

Unpack your speakers-you'll likely have two speakers and perhaps a subwoofer.

    • 2

Identify the left and the right speaker, and set them up appropriately on your computer desk or wherever you want to place them.

    • 3

Place the controls within easy reach of where you'll be sitting.

    • 4

      Shut down your computer.

    • 5

Connect the powered speaker to the unpowered speaker using the supplied cable. Depending on the speakers you've bought you may be able to skip this step-some speakers are hard-wired to each other.

    • 6

Connect your speakers to the sound card on your computer. This is usually a matter of matching up the color of the jack on your speaker cable to the color of the input on the sound card. If not, look for an input jack with a headphone or a speaker icon next to it.

    • 7

Connect your speakers to the power source. Depending on the speakers you've bought, the power cable may be hard-wired to the speakers or may need to be plugged in.

    • 8

      Power up your computer.

    • 9

Turn the speakers on, then test the speakers using a music CD or music file.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may find it easier to connect up your speakers before placing them. This will depend on the length of the speaker cables and where your computer case is located. If your case is sitting on or close to the floor, it's usually easiest to place the speakers first then drop the cables down the back of your desk.
