How to Install Drivers for a New Printer on Your Laptop PC

Installing a printer on a laptop PC is easy with your product manual and driver disk. If you’ve lost them, you can still install your printer as long as you have Internet access.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Driver disk
  • Internet access
  • Laptop PC
  • Printer

Step1
Set up your printer in a convenient location.
Step2
Connect the printer to your laptop using a USB cable. If your printer is fairly old, it may have a parallel port, in which case you'll need a USB-to-parallel cable.
Step3
Insert the driver disk that came with your printer into your CD-ROM drive.
Step4
Follow the onscreen instructions to install your printer. This should only take a few minutes.
Step5
Once you’ve finished the driver installation you may need to restart your laptop.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you lose your printer installation disk, you can usually download drivers for your printer at the manufacturer’s Web site.
  • It’s always a good idea to check the manufacturer’s Web site periodically for driver updates if your printer does not have an automatic update feature. Every 6 months is usually frequent enough.
  • If you’re adding a printer to your home network, you must install the printer drivers on every computer that will use the printer.
  • Many printers do not come with cables. Before you buy a printer, check the box to see if you need to buy a cable separately.
